After several friendlies with the Coedpoeth Dragonesses, we were delighted to take part in their inaugural over 40s tournament on Sunday 17th August. The weather was fantastic, the atmosphere was friendly and the competition strong, it was a fabulous day. With a squad of nine for the 7 a-side event, everyone had a chance to get good game time and adequate rests.
Five teams took part, Coedpoeth, Chester, Nottingham Forest Vets, Blaby and Whetstone FC and 1874 Northwich. The format was a round robin, with 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 points for a loss. Every team played each other twice. Nottingham Vets were clear winners, with Chester FC in second. Third and fourth placed teams both had the same points, but Blaby and Whetstone just pipped 1874, as the Leicestershire team had a better goal average.
It was a really well organised event, with excellent officials and a brilliant tombola – several of the 1874 team left with goodies to take home! Definitely one for next year’s diary.
