It is with great sadness that we report that we have lost two of our founder members, Tommy Ward and Roger Oxley. Both made a huge contribution to all aspects of our club.
Back in the early days, Roger was a formidable (if fairly stationary) goalkeeper, who whilst he wouldn’t dive for the ball, managed to keep shots out with his feet. Tommy was a tricky player, who was difficult to play against. Both were friendly, enthusiastic and lovely.
When, in 2021, a women’s section was set up, Tommy and Roger were both involved in supporting the women. They both continued to do this, moving to refereeing when they could no longer play. Irrespective of the weather they would be there to give us the benefit of their experience. Sadly, Tommy’s health meant that we saw less of him in recent years, but Roger was still refereeing until very recently.
The loss of these two fantastic men has been felt across both the men’s and women’s sections of the club and whilst we are saddened by the loss, we are thankful that we spent time with them. They were very much loved and we have happy memories of them both.
